Missions: Love and Passion Required!

I really enjoyed reading your reflections on the missionaries that you studied. From what I read, you all found inspiration or learned lessons from these amazing people who have and who continue to pour out their lives to share the love of God with people.

Here are some highlights from your reflections:

Katie is a great example of someone who is so in love with God, and I can really learn from her and her relationship with Jesus. {Mercedes}

What inspires me about Katie is her willingness to give without question of how she will provide for herself and how she selflessly gave up all the comforts that she knew and loved...she listened to God’s will even though it seemed like what he was asking was impossible. {Kate}

The part of this missionary journey that inspires me the most is his [Brother Andrew's] persistence. Even when everything was against him, he had faith, faith that the Lord our God would allow it to happen if it was meant to be. It would be a blessing to have such faith as he did, even if I never did anything extravagant. {Claire}

One thing I think is important for us to realize is that if we are doing God’s work, he will provide what we don’t already have. He knows that we are human, and he knows what we are and aren’t capable of. We just need to take a step back and let him do what he does. {Natalie}

I can become involved with Ben Carson’s story by trying my best in everything that is laid before me both physically and spiritually. {Tyson}

Spiritual Disciplines

I am really excited to begin this challenge with you, and I hope that all of you will take it up!

There are two parts to this unit of study. The first part is the weekly readings from the book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life (Whitney). These readings are required as are the weekly reflections/questions. We will discuss these together, and you will share your reflections via google docs.

The second portion means actually beginning to incorporate the spiritual disciplines into your daily life. This is optional (because I can't really hang over your shoulder every day!), but I believe that in order to be effective, "spilling over" Christians who naturally "declare the excellencies of Christ" we need to be spending time with Jesus - through prayer, the Word, worship, solitude, and so on.

For this week, you'll need to do the following:

1. Finish reading chapters 1-3.
2. Answer the reflection questions that I will send to you. These are due on Tuesday. I will give you Monday's class to work on them.
3. Memorize 1 Peter 2:9. This will be tested on Tuesday.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

4. On Monday, those of us who want to incorporate the spiritual disciplines can chat about the best way to encourage each other in doing that. Come with your ideas, please!

Due January 21

To avoid confusion, I've pasted the Bible memory verses below. These will be tested on Monday, January 21. In addition to this, myths 19, 20 and 21 will be due this Monday as well.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”  For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10:8-13

Heading Towards Mid-Term

Can you believe it? Only a few more weeks and we'll be at the mid year point. You'll be only one semester away from graduation!

Here's the homework for the week:

1. Complete the "Brain Food" sections for chapters 15-17, Myths of the Resurrection.
2. Memorize 1 Corinthians 15:3-6.

We're going to be finalizing plans for the date night project at that point as well, so bring any great ideas you have. Mrs. Pitcher gave permission, so all we have to do is make it happen!

December 5, 2012

Well, that month went quickly. I just noticed that it has been a month since the last blog post!

This week:
  • Remember to read and do the "Brain Food" sections for each chapter in the Myths About the Bible section (chapters 9-14 in Don't Check Your Brains at the Door). You can add these to your original document and share it with me.
  • Come prepared to work on two detailed plans: the fun fair (promotion event) and the free babysitting evening. We need to set dates and put together a detailed proposal for the PAC and Mrs. Pitcher.
See you at chapel on Friday!

Tuesday 6 November 2012

Busy week...lots to do!

There are a number of assignments due this coming Tuesday (November 13) as well as a Bible memory test and a quiz. Here's the summary:

1. Each of you was given a ministry opportunity to research this week. Please be ready to report back on Tuesday.
  • Natalie: regular help around the school (see Mrs. Pitcher)
  • Tyson/Jaewon: food banks or soup kitchens
  • Mercedes: school-wide blessing (see Mrs. Pitcher and Mrs. Klassen [PAC])
  • Kate/Claire: Victoria trip (YWAM or other opportunities)

2. Change your elementary style gospel lesson to one that would work for a grade 8-9 class or chapel session. Write out your plan for activities and the focus of the Biblical teaching.

3. Quiz on the attributes of God.

4. Bible memory (including the references, please)

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5

Victoria reflection

Even though I was not able to spend a lot of time with you there, I enjoyed our trip to Victoria last week. Please take the time to reflect on your experience by answering the following questions.

1. What did you enjoy the most? Explain.
2. Which mission activity did you find the most challenging? Why?
3. What percentage of the time (approximate) was spent on practical service and how much on spiritual? Do you think there is a way to change this? Is there a need? Explain.
4. If we did this again, what would you want to change and why?
5. Describe one person you met on this trip who made an impact on you. Under what circumstances did you meet? Why did meeting this person make an impact on you?

Don't forget to write a letter or card of appreciation to your pastor and hand it in to me by Friday.

Chapters 6-7 of Don't Check Your Brains at the Door  are due next Monday.

Please have permission forms for visiting the Coastal Messenger ready for me by Friday.
